While it is true that most people do not have one leg that is actually structurally shorter than the other, that is, the bones are shorter, it is equally as true that vast numbers have what is known as a functional shortening of one leg. This means that the foot flattens, due to a collapsing arch, dropping the ankle closer to the ground. The result is a difference in the length of the legs. To compensate for this, in an attempt to regain equilibrium, the pelvis may tilt, the spine or opposite knee may bend, or you may unconsciously move the longer leg out to the side.

Orthotic therapy can help correct this by supporting and restoring the arch back to its optimal position. This can re-establish proper leg length and restore proper alignment, relieving the stress on the knees, hips, and spine. At McDowell Orthopedics & Podiatry Group, we use Sole Supports custom orthotics to help our patients relieve pain and get back to the activities they love.
