Home Remedies for Sweaty Feet

Comments (0)

As part of the greater Sacramento, CA community, we don’t get excessively cold weather like other areas of the country, but things will start cooling down a bit for the next couple of months. This means feet may spend more time covered in socks and shoes, which can lead to strong foot odor. Home remedies for sweaty feet can help you avoid embarrassing foot odor.Home remedies

Sweat is frequently associated with a pungent odor, but it actually doesn’t have any scent of its own. The smell everyone recognizes is actually a byproduct from bacteria on the feet breaking down sweat. No one wants to think about having bacteria on their body, but this is actually quite normal.

To further create opportunity for embarrassing aroma, feet do not have oil glands and, instead, rely on hundreds of thousands of sweat glands to keep the skin moisturized. The combination of the two factors can make for some stinky feet. Fortunately, there are methods of improving the situation.

Some home remedies can be particularly effective at preventing foot odor:

  • Sock Choices – Socks made from moisture-wicking material and natural fabrics allow your feet to stay dry and cool throughout the day. Ones made from polyester and nylon have a tendency to trap sweat and should be avoided.

  • Hygienic Practices – Washing your feet every day should be standard practice, but you can improve the process by using antibacterial soap. Also, make sure your feet dry completely, especially the areas between toes, before putting on socks and shoes. This will help prevent bacterial and fungal growth.

  • Antiperspirant – This particular product is commonly associated with armpit use, but applying antiperspirant to your feet is an effective step in reducing sweat.

  • Foot Powder – Afterwards, sprinkle foot powder on your feet and shoes.

  • Alternate Shoes – Switch between two different pairs of shoes every other day. This gives each pair 24 hours to completely dry out between uses.

  • Go Barefoot – As long as you do not have diabetes or related conditions, walk barefoot at home and give your feet a chance to breathe.

These home remedies work well for most cases of sweaty feet, but you may need professional care to address a more severe situation. If so, McDowell Podiatry Group is here for you.
